  • The half-life of Indium-166 was measured in a new experiment for undergraduate physics students at Francis Marion University. This laboratory is part of a series of computer-based experiments that the Department of Physics and Astronomy has added to the introductory physics curriculum. Students use a Vernier LabPro interface, LoggerPro software, and a radiation monitor to observe, measure, and plot the activity of a radioactive isotope. The sample under study was Indium-116. This radioactive isotope was formed via neutron-activation using the Californium-252 source that is part of the department's ongoing health physics program. Indium-116 has a half-life of 54 minutes. The experiment yielded highly accurate results and was well-received by the students. The procedure would also be effective with other radioactive isotopes, including the popular "Barium cow". The experimental will be explained. Pictures of the laboratory apparatus and sample results will also be presented.
